It's no hidden secret that some states are much better than others when it comes to Jeep off road adventures. While you are more than likely well aware of this, the team at Altitude Jeep thought you might be curious to know which states are the very best off road destinations as you begin planning for your summer road trips in your Wrangler.
For this week’s blog, we scoured the Internet and added a bit of our own personal opinions in order to give you a definitive list of what we believe to be the top five best states to get in some quality Jeep wheelin'.
Before we proceed, it’s worth noting that all of the best states on our list are in the West. If you want a list of the best off roading trails specifically for the East Coast, stay tuned.
The West is called the ‘Wild West’ for a reason — being chock-full of wide open spaces and public lands for a free range off roading experience. In order to rank our picks for the best spots, we took into consideration the amount of public land, the versatility of the trail types, and the varying difficulty of the trailscapes.
So, without further ado, we recommend visiting one of these five states (or all of them if you’re ambitious) for your next off road adventures in your Jeep Wrangler. Just remember to stock up on all of the best Jeep off road accessories from Altitude Jeep before you hit the road.
#5 - New Mexico
Hundreds of miles of roads and challenging trails are available to the public, making Red River one of the top places in New Mexico for off roading. It seems like you can turn virtually any direction off Main Street and find a trail to ride through Taos County. Head down for Memorial Day weekend for the annual motorcycle rally for some classic entertainment and make your way on the trails the rest of the time.
Aside from Red River, New Mexico makes the list because of its versatile terrain. You can head off the highway and choose from the over 30 trails that wind throughout the Land of Enchantment. From sliding through the desert sand and sage to crawling up the enormous red rocks, you won’t be bored or disappointed when you go off roading through New Mexico.
#4 - Arizona
With every type of terrain imaginable, Arizona makes our top five list. If you’re in the mood to get a little lost in the empty land and explore what feels like another planet in your Jeep, then we’re confident you’ll have fun tearing up the over 40 off road trails Arizona has to offer. Through the Northern and Central mountains down to the desert land that borders Mexico, the Arizona terrain will keep you guessing and your wheels turning.
#3 - Alaska
Take a ride on the wild side when you head through our neighbors to the north and into Alaskan terrain. Alaska makes our top three states because it’s one of those destinations that is unbeatable in terms of beauty, but it can be quite difficult to find and even get to safe public trails to ride. This guide helps visitors find off roading trails for your 4x4 where you can spend hours or days wheeling.
Like we said, the main reason to take your Jeep up to Alaska is that the views are astonishing and breathtaking. The camping brings solitude, and the wheeling is seemingly unending. While some of the trails are difficult to get to and have limited access during the year, there are a multitude of paths around the regional cities that make it possible to do daily excursions or even go out for a longer camping adventure.
#2 - Colorado
There’s no doubt that Colorado has some of the best off roading trails in the United States, and we’d like to think we say that with little to no bias from being Colorado natives here at Altitude Jeep.
From riding through the Rocky Mountains and camping along the way to heading out on the wide open prairie, Colorado offers plenty of variety for Jeeping. There are extraordinarily difficult trails that head up into alpine elevation, and there are beginner and intermediate trails that offer a fun off roading experience for all drivers and passengers, which help bring this state towards the top of the list.
People almost always mention Colorado as one of their preferred Jeeping destinations because it’s something that both the tourists and the locals enjoy. Colorado takes great care of their natural areas and really respects staying to the trail.
It’s easy to stick to designated off road trails because they are well-maintained and they are located all across the state in the wide variety of landscapes that Colorado has to offer. One of the most notable Jeeping trails is Engineer Pass outside of Ouray in Southern Colorado. Not only is it an adventure driving on the highways and backroads to get to the trail, but the trail itself is challenging and breathtaking.
#1 - Utah
Utah comes in at the number one spot, and for any of you Jeep off roaders who have made the trek to Moab in the past, you know exactly why. Utah is the ultimate off roader paradise.
The landscape and trails of Utah offer a giant playground for Jeepers who come from all around the country for the best off roading experience. Rock crawling, creek crossing, and sand sliding through Moab is a bucket-list item for many Jeep lovers, and Zion National Park has some of the most amazing sights of any Jeep trails in the country.
The trails in Moab are not for the faint of heart with some peaking you over the edge of massive cliffs that offer the ultimate adrenaline rush. We recommend starting off getting your feet wet (literally) in Kane Creek Canyon splashing through the creeks or the Cliff Hanger trail on the edge of town before making your way to the beasts that are Moab Rim, Hell’s Revenge, and The Upper Hellorado.
If you want more information for planning an off roading trip to Utah, Utah.com/atv has plenty of maps and other handy guides to help you plan for your epic Jeeping adventure.
On a side note, we know as a Jeep owner you have heard this frequently, but it’s never a bad reminder to hear: tread lightly as you venture across the nation so we can continue to enjoy our landscapes and trails for centuries more.
